Saturday, April 26, 2025 The annual “Derrick Days” Festival was established in 1976 to commemorate Corsicana’s rich oil history and its significant impact on the community’s development. Drilling for water in 1894 resulted in the first significant discovery of oil west of the Mississippi River, which led to Texas’ first oil boom. In 1923, a new and even larger oil deposit, the Powell oil field, unleashed a new oil boom. March 2, 1836 Texas Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. Sixty delegates from all over Texas signed the declaration. In the fall of 1835, many Texans, both Anglo-American colonists and Tejanos, concluded that liberty and republicanism in Mexico, as reflected in its Constitution of 1824, were dead.
